THE MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Gisborne Harbor Board was held to-day, there being present Messrs. J. Tombleson, chairman, A. 11. Wallis; T. Todd, J. B. Broadhurst, A. A. Fraser, H. J. F. Tomblcson, M. Doyle, T. Cor: son, A. J. Nieol, A. C, Steele, T! Quirk, G. kSmith, (’. 11. Williams, and Dr. ,T. 0. Collins.
The Gisborne Lightering aiul Steve-* during 'Co., Ltd,, forwarded a request for the installation of a telephone at the slipway for the . use of the shipowners. The request was received, being the subject of reference in-the reports of the engineer and works committee. After-some discussion it was decided to install a telephone at - the slipway, and to levy a charge on the basis of tonnage, with a maximum of 10s per ship and a minimum of f>s for ships using the 'main slip, ' with a smaller charge for users of the laulfcii slipway. The works committee was authorised to deal with, the matter.
The Marine Department forwarded notice of . the Minister’s sanction for the reclamation work at “The Point,” at the confluence of the Taruheru and Waimata- rivers, as proposed by . the Harbor Board and Borough Council jointly.—The chairman mentioned An connection with the matter that the engineer was loth to spare any of the timber at present available for the reclamation of “The Point,” and ho' suggested that the works committee make an inspection to decide’ what course should he followed. The whole scheme was based on tile expectation of the Harbor Board finding the timber required for the job.—Members of the board held that only timber that could be spared without the possibility of its having to be replaced later should lie made available for t-lic work. The works committee was empowered to visit the hoard's dumps, and inspect the timber supplies there. . An acknowledgment- was received from the Poverty Bay Basketball Association respecting the board's kindness in allowing the association the use of a cargo shed for practice purposes. The letter also thanked Mr. Ben. Bird, wharfinger, for his attention thrdughout the period of practice.—Received. WORKS' COMMITTEE’S REPORT The report of the works committee was as under - “Telephone to Slipway.—The.engineer submitted a letter he had received from the Gisborne Lightering-Stevedoring Co. urging that telephonic communication be provided at the slipway. The com-
mittee recommends the board to accede to this request provided the users of the slipway agree to pay a charge that will reimburse the board about three-quarters of the annual cost, “Reclamation at The Point.—The engineer submitted the Marine Department’s approval of the plan of reclamation work proposed to be carried out by the Gisborne Borough Council at the confluence of the Taruheru arid Waimata .rivers. The question of providittg timber to the council for this work was considered and the committee is arranging for an inspection of the board’s available material, accorhpaniedt byDtli<| i borough’s and the board’s engineers. “Future Works, Loan and Maintenance.—At- the last meeting the board directed the committee to investigate I and report particulars of loan works still to be carried out, also of maintenance expenditure requiring expert engineering supervision in coming years. The committee has'been unable to arrange time to carry out this instruction and reqests that it be allow-; ed additional lime to deal with the question.” The report was adopted without discussion, the works committee being granted Die additional time asked for iiKconnection with the engineering department’s inquiry.
