NEW PROCESS
REMOVAL OF WOOL FROM PELTS CHRISTCHURCH INVENTION As the result of the invention of Mis 0 lledberg, of Christchurch, of a new piocess ol "treating sheep and other skins, it- is claimed that a great improvement in tlie quality of the pelts olid slipe wool produced in the Dominion may lie anticipated. The new process lias been demonstrated to Dr. I'.. Marsden, secretary of the Department or Scientific and Industrial Research, and to responsible officers of the Department of Agriculture, and other experts; and it is hoped to give a private d.-moiistratioii to the Minister for Agricultir.e, the Hon. D. Jones, next week. The •experimental stage of the process I,as been practically completed, but it has yet to be subjected to bulk trials under rigid practical working conditions. Wool and leather experts win) hr-vo seen demonstrations of the pro„ess say that, provided the bulk trials prove successful, it will be difficult to assess the added value that will be given to those products. This will be effected by the better quality of slipe wool and of pelts produced under the. new process, and by the reduction of costs made possiblo 'by its adoption. The new process, which is expected t reduce the cost of fellmongevy by 25 per cent-., aims at doing the doinkiting (the loosening of the. wool I'ioin the skin) by means of a lio-n----poisonous solution, containing no lime. This would enhance the value of the pelts and would eliminate “thirds.” the name given to the damaged wool. The new process would also simplify il.-e present complicated and expensive “dolly” system. Experiments with butchers,’ or “pie,” pieces have, resulted in the wool being removed in sohiHor, without damage, and leaving the pieces in perfect condition for the manufacture of gelatine and glue. The highly offensive smell resulting from the present method of treating these pieces is obviated.
