THE AUCKLAND MEETING STEWARDS TO BINGEN CREST MANY CLOSE FINISHES (Per Press Association.) ' AUCKLAND, last night. The Auckland Trotting Club’s spring meeting opened yesterday. The weather was cold and showery. The track was in good order, but a little slow after the rain. The totalisator handled £19,220, compared with £20,449 10s for the first day last year. Nearing the turn, Worthy Queen and Carl Mack broke after heading Moko Girl; and in an exciting finish, Effigy won by half a head, Zanzibar was fourth. Improvers’ Handicap. —2' Roy do Quest (August) 1,4 Great Fame (Nowdick) 2, 3-Margaret Wallace (Lee) 3. Auto Machine went to the front early and the second time past the stands led from Genuine, Enawali, Stanmoor, Gold Treasure and Ngingongingo. With 1 a 1 lap covered, Dad’s Hope took charge to lead along the back 'from' Concertina, Nella Dillon and Benefice. Benefice ran up and entered the straight with Dad’s Hope clear of Concertina.' Arabond was in front before the end of a lap and, along the top, led from Great Fame, Kowpio’s Triumph and Harvest Boy Arabond stayed on well to win by 1| lengths from Groat Fame. Gumdigger was fourth. ‘ ‘ Stewards’ Handicap.—2 Bingen Crest (F. J. ‘Smith) 1, 3 Gaza (L. { Mahoney) 2, 6 Hohora, (McSweenoy) 3. Also started r 10 Betty Moko, 5 Dad’s Hope, 8 Glandore, 9 Goldman, 7 High Sea, 1 Little Guy, 4 Master Huia. Won by Ij lengths, and lengths. Time, 2.18 3-5. Bingen Crest went out fast to lead past the istands from Hohora, Gaza and High Sea, Rounding the bend, Bingen Crest was clear of Gaza and Hohora and went on to win well. Dad’s Hope was fourth. G. Baton, driver of Goldman, was before the I stewards and was fined £2 for careless driving, having crossed Gaza. Electric. Handicap.—2 Tumatakura (C. Smith) 1,2 Great Ballin (F. Mi Smith) 2, 7 Hal Chimes (August) 3. The first and secofid horses • were bracketed.
