Pear trees in about 25 backyard or domestic orchards in Christchurch have been found to lie infected with firebligiht, A new scale of fees 1 for jurors! and witnesses has been gazetted. Common jurors, previously receiving 12s for a lull and 6s for the half-day, will now receive 10s 6d' and 5s respectively. The payment' for witnesses has also been reduced from 10s to 9s per day; and from' 4s to 3s 6d per night if they are away from home. The above fees aro also subject to the payment of Id tux on every 6s 3d in common with the usiial salaries. V The decision of the export slaughter* I men of Victoria to end tlie strike was .carried on Thursday by 927 votes to 596. Fewer Gisborne visitors than usual visited the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Show, held this week. Those who attended report on the marked improvement'in‘the fat lamb display, compared with those at the Hawke’s Bay Show of recent year's. It has been 1 fl-eoly admitted that the lambs at the Poverty Bay !Show are infinitely better than at* Hasttings, but it is declared that 1 even with this year's improvement the \cxhibitfs as a whole do not come up to the Poverty Bay standard. Gisborne breeders wore not exhibitors, except Messrs. Hutchiifson Bros., wild secured the' reserve championship’ for Hereford (hills with' a most promising two-yettr-old j the bull which secured 1 the championship had the advantage' of being a.year older. In addition, Messrs. Hutchinson Bros, secured first awards for their two-year and yearling Hereford hulls.
