REALISTIC WAR GAMES
STAGED ACROSS RUSSIA / MOSCOW, Sept. 19. The Soviet Russia’s Red army began ths annual manoeuvres to-day which extended to all parts of Soviet Republics. Local populations of frontier regions co-operated in defence against “efiemies.” The entire population of Leningrad continued a five-day rehearsal of defence against air attacks of bomb and poison gas. The populace was warned of a gas attack by screaming or sirens and radio broadcast. At the warning signal, people rushed to cellars and donned gas masks, all stores and shops were closed, and work ceased until the theoretical danger was passed. Tue press warned that Leningrad was mpst likely to he the first objective of Soviet “enemies.” The message that the city must be ready to defend itself was repeated on placards and billboards.
