Sir Michael Myers, the Chief Justice, underwent an operation yesterday afternoon in Bowen street Hospital, lie is making good progress, and it is anticipated that lie will resumo Ins judicial duties in about three weeks’ time.—P.A. Advice lias been received by Mr. J. A. Wilkinson, chief clerk in the Public Works Department’s office in Gisborne, of his transfer on promotion to the corresponding post in the Napier office, lie succeeds these Mr. J. G. Hannah, whose promotion to tho chief clerkship in Wei lington leaves the Napier vacancy. Mr. Wilkinson’s successor in Gisborne will he Mr. C. Halliday, of the Tauinarumfi. staff of the department. About 120 couples attended a dance last night in the Makaraka-Matu-wliero Hall organised by Mr. 11. Hammond in aid of Maori Church funds. The Blue Bird orchestra supplied the music. Mr.'Main Rangi was 'M.O. During the evening several dancing competitions were held, drawing good entries, the contests being keen. Mr. W. Rangi was an efficient judge and his decisions were well received. Prizes were awarded to the following: Best nil round dancers, Miss 'lk Ross and Mr. J. Walker, who won the onestep, foxtrot and waltzing competitions, with Miss E. Moo.ro and Mr. W. Wells second. Monte Carlo: Miss 'l'. Boss and Mr. J. Walker.
