QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly mooting of the Giitborne Methodist 'Church av«s held last Tuesday evening, when, in addition to the Revs. W. J. Elliott chairman, and T. 11. Carr and Messrs. G. 8. Vincent and P. 11. Forge, there Avas a representative attendance of other officials. After the confirmation of the minutes the chairman referred to the character and Avork of the late Mr. Charles Hawkins, and moved a re sol alution suitable to the occasion. This was supported by Mr. G. S. Vincent, who had been associated with the deceased in Sunday school Avork for several years. The report on church membership shoAved that several had joined during the quarter, and others Avcre in preparation. The Sunday school returns revealed the evidence of faithful work. On the motion of the chairman, a tribute of appreciation was recorded in recognition of the devoted services given by Messrs. G. S. Vincent and the late Mr. C. HaAvkins, and their Avives to the Sunday school at Victoria Township during a period of 14 years. The balance-sheet showed that the income did not meet the current expenditure, and several methods were suggested as a 'moans df remedying this. The foreign mission income had also suffered on account of, the prevailing depression. Special collections for Sunday school anniversaries were authorised, and a Christmas retiring collection in aid of the Auckland Methodist Orphanage. The Rev. W. J. Elliott reported that he Avas conducting a class every Monday evening in homiletics, or the art of’ Bible study and preaching for young men, and would AVelcome any who felt anxious for some training. It was reported by the agent, Mr. Bass, that all subscriptions to the church paper, the Methodist Times, had been paid. Messrs. W. I). Tare and James Olwisp Avore appointed representatives to the annual Synod, which meets in Palmerston North on November IT. On the nomination of the circuit stewards, the Rev. W. J. Elliott accepted a cordial invitation to remain as superintendent of the circuit for a third year, ,subject to the decision of' conference. The resignation of Mrs. J. Russell as sacramental steward was received on account of her removal to Wairoa, and she Avas Avarmly thanked for her services. . On the nomination of the chairman, Mesdaines M. Bealey, A. O. Coleman and Miss D. M, Spence Avere appointed to the sacramental stewardship arid were cordially Welcomed to tjjo quarterly board.
