RECONSTRUCTION TASK
MERGER DISCUSSED Damage to meat-freezing works in Hawke’s Bay by the earthquake was enormous. Tho plants and buildings at Tomoana, Pakipaki, and Whakatu all suffered extensively. Plans for reconstruction are being hastened, but Ihe restoration of the three works involves a huge expenditure. A proposal for the merger of Nelsons (N.Z.), Ltd., with the Hawke’s Bay Eanners’ Freezing Go., Ltd., is to be decided at an early date. Meantime the farmers of the district are taking :m .active interest in the proposal, to which some opposition lias been expressed, while others consider that the scheme offers a means of saving many thousands of pounds.
Meanwhile, Thus. Bortliwick and Sons (Australasia) Ltd., are making preparations for the reconstruction of the works at Pakipaki. The cost of the undertaking is said to be likely to tint into something over £l.id,ooo, involving engineering and building jobs of considerable magnitude.
