TRAFFIC CONTROL
LONDON EXPERIMENT OXFOPvD ST. "RATIONALISED" LONDON, Feb. 27. The biggest experiment in traffic contol which has been made in this country is shortly to bo put into effect in the West-end of London. Oxford street is to be made a rationalised highway. Traffic is to be subject to the direction of automatic signals. The scheme, which lias been under consideration for some months, has now been worked out in detail. Regulations are to be issued to: Restrict the waiting of vehicles. Prohibit slow-moving traffic, Including horse-drawn vehicles. Prohibit vehicles turning round in the street. As a result of those and other measures, it is hoped that traffic in Oxford street, now one of the worst areas of congestion, will How continuously throughout the length of the thoroughfare. FLEXIBLE PLAN The system to he adopted for increasing safety and relieving congestion in Oxford street is known as the "flexible progressive system." Based upon careful calculations, the progress of vehicles across Oxford street will be so arranged that vehicles proceeding along the length of the thoroughfare will, at intervals, he given an uninterupted progress at the set speed between Mable Arch and St. Uiles'-circus (Tottenham-court road). In order to provide adequate arrangements for the guidance of fa (lie, signs and notices will be erected and white lines laid down in suitable positions. For the safety of pedestrians, it is proposed that signals should be of the "three-way" type, by which pedestrians have one signul in view directly ahead in whichever direction they cross.
