Fifty men who arc being translerred from -the Waikokbpu end of the Gis-borne-VYipioa railway to Galatea, which is embraced in the extensive development scheme announced by the Government, are- held up at a point where tin-. day road has become impassable owing to'heavy ram. They left VYaikokopu on Monday' for Galaleu by sorvico car, and the first news of llieii plight reached Wairoa yesterday, when Mr, Dobbie. of Wairoa, "took a lorry load of provisions and clothes to the marooned men. Re turning to Wairoa, Mr. Dobbie slated that the road was in a "terrible state." Mr. Dobbie. has since started for Rotorua, via Napier, in an endeavor to get through to the party from the north. Mr. Wyllie, the service driver, who knows the road well, states that he came through last night. He thinks that Air. Dobbie will be successful in getting through from Rotorua. Mr. Wyllie saw the party on Wednesday morning ill Aniwaniwa as they -were leaving there. It was then raining heavily. He did not think the party would get through, and advised them against attempting it. Apparently they went on, and the service driver's anticipation that they would gel stuck was verified. The men arc stuck at a point nine miles on the Wairoa side of the saddle, and there is no accommodation for 21 "miles. 12 miles on the Rotorua side of the saddle, Mr Wyllie did not leave Wairoa for Rotorua Oil his usual trip this morning. j j ■■»—»—
