THE EARTH’S MOVEMENT
PHYSICIST’S NEW THEORY WOUND UP LIKE A CLOCK NEW YORK, Dec. 30. Dr. Robert Millikan, the eminent physicist, addressing the opening session of*the American Association for the Advancement of Science, at Cleveland, presented arguments based on his recent researches into the cosmic ray, to prove his contention that the universe, like a clock, is constantly being wound up by a “Creator who is constantly on the job.” Professor Millikan, discussing “atomic disintegration and atomic synthesis” assured the gathering that scientific belief in evolutionary progress did not imply a disbelief in religion and offered his “increasing universal energy” theory as an argument in refutation of the British scientists, Sir James Jeans and Professor Eddington, who contend that the universe’s energy Is disappearing due to tlm workings of the “second law of thermodynamics.”
