ROWING

G.R.C. FIRST FOURS INITIAL ROUND CONCLUDED Three races were rowed yesterday ip the Gisborne Rowing Club’s first, trial fours series, one being decided in the morning and the other two- after 5 p.m. The Taruhem course of three-quarters of a mile was again used, Mho starting point, being at Roebuck road, and the finish at the clubhouse. The morning race was tlio best of the three, so far as the closeness of the finish went, for a line rally by tho losers brought them within a naig'ow margin of victory, after being led alt the way down the river. The crews in this race wero R. Anderson (sir.), €. Armstrong,. H. Gardner, and Sea ley; and A. F. Allen (sir.), L. Ryan, K. Oarer, and L. l’otts, /, The histnanied four took tho lead in tho eurlv stages, and had an advantage of a length near the finishing post. Andcr : son put in a great final burst, however, and reduced tho margin to about half a. canvas as the boats went past the finishing Hue. After a line start in tho first, race of tlio evening, the boats were called back for a re-start, after repairs to a poppetin the boat used by G. J. Jeune (Str.), Honan, Burge, and K. Bell, whose opponents comprised G. C. Jones (stv.), I. Brosnahan, Walker, and Stevens. The second start was also good, and keeping his stroke short until through the Ballance street bridge, Jeune gained a lead that lie gradually extended to nearly two lengths at tho finish. The winning crow went with a fine swing, and should have a good chance of winning Hie series. Tlio crews in the final race of the- first round wore H. Hunter (str.), McGregor, Callaghan and Robertson; and W, F, Kennedy (stv.), Mallet, Kidd and Pres* land. With three novices in bis boat, Kennedy was slow off the mark, and. 1 his opponent had no difficulty in takiug and keeping tlio lead, clear water showing between the boats at the finish. Tho losers did well in view of the inexperience of all but tho stroke.

Tlio second round of tho series will 1)0 vowed off this evening, when A. I'\ Allen meets Fr. J. Jeune, K. A. Woodward meets R. Ilanmi, and J. Bain meets H. Hunter. Bain won in tho first round from G. Forbes by default, owing to injuries suffered by two of Forbes’ crew.
