YESTERDAY'S DISCUSSIONS
UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM

Unemployment was the main topic of discussion at the annual conference of the Xew Zealand Labor Party, which was resumed in the Trades Hall today. The action lo be taken regarding the reports of the Government committee on unemployment was determined after a lengthy discussion. The coul'eience decided thai an open industrial conference should he called, and from this gathering a committee should he appointed lo meet a committee from the New Zealand Labor Party for the purpose of considering the reports and the recommendations insofar its they affect the welfare of the general public and the workers of Xew Zealand, the joint (ommittee to furnish a report of its conclusions to the Parliamentary Labor Party on the some subject. A remit was referred lo the Parliamentary Labor Party suggesting thai thev should consider the value of a reduction of working hours in industry as a contribution lo minimising the uiimI er u( unemployed.
In the afternoon the conference carried a remit supporting the repeal of the sections in the Industrial Concilialion and Arbitration Act, which exempts county councils or road boards from the general application of awards, and local authorities and public bodies carrying out relief works from the provision of awards, industrial agreements. or agreements under the Labor Disputes Investigation Act, 1513. It is expected thai the conference will conclude its business to-morrow night.
