HYDRO-ELECTRICITY
POWER FROM SOUTHERN LAKES
A party of surveyors, under Mr. 11. P. Gibbs, of New York, left Invercargill last week for Doubtful Sound in connection with the project- to establish hydro-electric works in the Sounds district.
Tho American Cyanide Go. has an option from the New Zealand HydroElectric •Co.. granted in January. 1926, for the purchase of the, latter’s concessions. The (Tlojeet contemplates the development of 250,0C0 h.p. using the waters of Lakes Manapouri and Te Avian hy means of a 61-mile tunnel terminating in pipe lines at Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound. Works would he erected here for obtaining eleCo-chemienl products involving the extraction of nitrogen from the atmosphere. Tho party has already spent, some time at Lake Munapoifri. and will carry out, .survey and exploration work between Deep (Jove and the lakes.
