RIGHT TO VOTE

SAMOAN DEPORTEE (Pur Pr«*«s Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. The lion. 0. F, Nelson, of Samoa, lias been granted a vote in the forthcoming by-election in Parnell. For two years Mr. Nelson lias resided at Remiiera, Auckland, having made his home there since the order of deportation from Samoa was made against him. The law relating to voting qualifications in New Zealand provide that a voter must either bo a British subject, by birth or by naturalisation in New Zealand. Emphasis is being laid on the latter clause. It so happened that Mr. Nelson was living in Samoa when, in 1924, he was granted his naturalisation papers. These were issued under the hand and seal of the Governor-General at Wellington. The fact that they were issued in the Dominion established Mr. Nelson’s claim to a vote in a New Zealand constituency. 'His eldest daughter has also been granted the franchise.
