GROUP SETTLEMENT
AN OTAGO PURCHASE (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, announces that the purchase has been completed by the Government of a portion of Mr. and Mrs. J. Beattie’s property at Cambrians, Central \ Otago, known as “The Downs.” The area concerned is 47911 acres, and has' been purchased under the group settlement system on behalf of eight applicants who are in a position to commence farming operations as soon as their respective sections are allotted to them. Grazing and mixed farming will be carried on by the new settlers. The group system of land settlement enables intending settlers to select an area which, if approved, is purchased by the Government and allocated to these applicants, who are required to pay 5 per cent, of the cost. They hold a license to occupy, and are given an opportunity of acquiring the freehold in a period of 304 years on completion of the payment of the purchase money.
