STOCK MOVEMENTS
A WAIROA RETURN (Herald Correspondent,) Your correspondent is indebted to Mr. N, Alackay, of To Maire, for the following tally of stock travelling .southwards from Wairoa and East Coast territory respectively (the period embraced is from April 1, 1929, to March 31, 1930} Sheep.—-From Wairoa County : Wethers, 17,700; ewes, 19,976; total 37,736. From Gisborne country : Wethers, 23,094; ewes, 7090; total 30,190. Grand total: 67.926. The total was divided up into 69 mobs, and it took 90 drovers and 480 dogs to handle them. Cattle. —From Wairoa County : Cows and heifers, 847; bullocks and steers. 54 67; total 6314. From Gisborne country: Cows and heifers, 1538; bullocks and steers, 5797; total 7335. Grand total : 13,649. The total number of mobs was 61, and it took 103 drovers and 482 dogs to handle them. The total of both sheep and cattle using tin l main highway smith is 43,839 head. There is a falling off in the number of sheep sent from Wairoa County, but Ibis is accounted for by the low wool oriees directing more stock to the local ftee/.ing works.
