THEFT FROM CHURCH
PRISONERS PROTEST "NOT PLAYING CRICKET" (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. At the instance of the Rev. Jasper Calder, prisoners at a Church of England service at Alt. Eden Gaol yesterday passed a resolution protesting against the theft from St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, Dunedin, last week, when two chalices, six bottles of wine, and other articles were stolen. "Now boys, I have a. brain wave," said Mr. Calder. "You and .1 between us might gl't the sacred vessels back. Suppose we send a resolution of protest to the Dunedin papers, showing that 350 prisoners thought this theft not cricket. Considering what the church has done, and is doing, its rather like biting the hand that feeds you. Don't you agree?" It was resolved "That this congregation of prisoners heartily protests against the theft id' sacred vessels from the House of God, and urges the thief to restore the chalices immediately."
