LAND SPEED RECORD

DON STILL UNLUCKY COURSE TOO BOUGH (Received April 11, noon.) DAY TUNA BEAUH, April 10. Kayo Don diove his great car over the course for the sixth time, but, principally due to the condition of the beach, he was unable to do better than 182.74 i miles an hour. At the end of four trips over the nine-mile course ho gave up the attempts for the day, laying blame on the imperfect course and the fact that the "windshield was clouded severely, especially while he was bound in a southward direction. "With the windshield clouded," Don stated, "it is easy to understand how Lockhart ran his car into the ocean here a year ago." Since Don ran last tire destroyed twothirds of the wooden stand from which a few persons watched the runs to-day. Don first came to the beach to-day driving a stock model roadster to feel out the course, but he got no further than the kilometre mark when he was forced to stop with a burned-out bearing. In the first run south with the racer Don tossed off the protective disc from one wheel. The loss was neither serious nor dangerous. National Guardsmen were unable to find the lost disc.

Although once troubled briefly by backfiring, the experts are encouraged over the car's performance. The car, since readjustments, has gained acceleration. The super chargers for the first time emitted a piercing whine, indicating that their speed had been increased and that the pressure was greater. This is the objective for which Don has been striving. It is expected that he will have little further carburettor difficulty.
