HIKURANGI TRAGEDY
THE CROSSING DANGER DEVIATION ADVOCATED (Special to the Herald.) WHANGAREI, this day. The urgent need for a road deviation at McLeod's Flat railway crossing, the scene of the Hikurangi disaster on Saturday evening, is to be urged by the AVhangarei Chamber of Commerce as the result of a resolution passed last night. The president, Mr. J. H. Walker, considered .that the chamber's support should be given in any effort for lessening the risk of another accident such as the recent one. Mr. 'Stringer suggested that the matter of a deviation should be taken up with the Whangarei County Council, the Main Highways Board, and Hie Auckland Automobile Association. He moved to this effect. • A member suggested that more distinctive lights should be fitted to locomotives. Mr. Storrar said that the elimination of railway crossings was a great problem, and in this case it was more a matter of a road deviation than one for the Railway Department. He thought the crossing under consideration was the least dangerous between Whangarei and Hikurangi, and perhaps when crossings were not dangerous they were treated lightly.
