To-morrow will seo the first day of the Waikato Racing Club'e meeting, and the presence of many horses which will appear later at Ellerslie and Avondalo will add much to the interest of the racing. The fields promise to be very good, and high quality is well represented in the entries for the principal events, namely the Storey Memorial Cup and the President's Handicap. Among the acceptors for the Memorial Cup is Vei'tigern, winner of the Gold Cup at Awapani, while the Wanganui Cup winner, In tho Shade, is another; Corinax, Eager Rose, Desert Glow arc still others accepted for in connection with the Memorial Cup. In the President's Handicap, I'egaway appears, and as this runner has the topweight for the Easter Handicap, the race will be an interesting guide to form. Count Palatine, who has not been raced for some weeks owing to a slight injury, will appear in the Linley aHndicap, according'to stable plans, aiid as this entry is believed to have a great chance in the Great Northern St. Leger, his performance to-mon'ow will bo closely watched. # # # • In connection with the Waikato meeting, the orginal list of acceptances omitted several important runners, including In tho Shade 8.9 and Mithra 7.0 in the Storey Memorial Cup, Vali 7.12 and Refresher 7.0 (since rehandicapped to 7.12). in the President's Handicap, Chief Joy 7.5, and King March 7.6, in the Juvenile Handicap, and Le Choucas 9.7 and Sea Cob 8.2 in the Puketaka Highweight Handicap. * * «• * Interest in the doings of New Zealand horses in Australia has been heightened by the convincing display given by tho Melbourne Cup winner Nightmarch last week, when Chide was defeated handsomely in tho Rawson Stakes. A new figure on the scene is Phar Lap, who is to contest the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm to-morrow, in company with Chide and Nightmarch. The Stakes are run over a mile and aquarter, at weight foil age, with allowances and penalties. Nightmarch will carry 9.7, including his penalty of 71bs.. and Phar Lap, also penalised 71bs., will carry 8.13. Glide's weight will he 9.2, a penalty of 51bs. being offset, partially by the gelding allowance of 31bs. * * * * Aucklanders are anxious to see the Masterton Cup winner, Historic, in action at Ellerslie during the Easter vacation, but the chances have dwindled since Historie's owner paid up for* him in connection with the Great Autumn at Riccavton. Another direction in which Ellerslie seems to be missing attractions is in relation to Great Charter and Chrysologv, Mr. T. IT. Lowry having paid up for the pair in connection with Rieearton events. # * * » Two New Zealand-bred horses scored victories at the West Australian Turf Club's meeting on March 26. Prince Paladin (by Paladin—Lovelorn) carried 10.5 to victorv in the Armidale Handicap (six furlongs) in lmin. 13J,sec, and Bondi (by Boniform—Secret Link) won the Kahtmiuida Handicap (one mile) under 9.1 in lmin. 40£sec. * * # * The stake earnings of Nightmarch have been assessed at over £22,300, the victory in the Rawson Stakes being estimated as worth £SOO at least. • » • • Some consistent work about the roads lias brought Royal Tea up to the point where a preparation for serious racing with tho smart sprinter of 12 months ago may be considered, and the horse has been seen at work on the Ellerslie track lately. His owner is hopeful that ho has shaken oil the trouble that handicapped him before.
