BASKETBALL

P.B. ASSOCIATION THE ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Basketball Association was held last evening, the Mayor, Air. JJ. W. Coleman, presiding over a large attendance. in his opening remarks, Mr. Coleman said it was very pleasing to see such a number of supporters attending the meeting. Although lie himself was a novice to the liner points of the game of basketball, tie realised what a line game it was, and had noticed a marked improvement in the standard of play during the last two years. The ladies were to be congratulated on the energy and enthusiasm with which they bad established basketball in Poverty Bay. Tho game was not only of a physical but of a social importance, in that it gave an opportunity for more friendly relationship among tho girls of tho town, in concluding, Mr. Coleman wished tho association all success, and hoped that the coming season would bo a most pleasant and profitable one. The financial statement of the association was read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patroness, Mrs. \Y. A. Bowie; president, Mrs. <!. 11, Scents; vice-presidents, Mesdames Beale and Cole, Miss Sadler, and Messrs. E. T. Doddroll, C. Rigby, M. ,). Kyne, and H. Murphy; bon. secretary. Miss A. Perry ; assistant secretary, iMiss E. Scott; reporter to Dominion executive, Miss C. Miller. The suggestion was made that it would be a wise and progressive move to divide each league into two grades, A and B, in order to encourage tho new, but keen teams who under tho existing arrangements became discouraged before the end of the season, as a result of playing so many one-sided games. It was pointed out that by playing two or three rounds in each grade there would be much keener competition. As a representative team was to be sent to the New Zealand tournament this year, it was also felt that the seniors would need a hard game every week to improve tho standard of play, in order to maintain Poverty Bay’s reputation in the world of sport. The question was discussed from every aspect, and the motion was passed. Much difficulty has been experienced in obtaining suitable courts for the playing of matches. It has now become necessary for the association to have permanent playing fields. This season a special effort is to be made to raise funds for the laying of a hard court. A sub-committee was appointed to visit certain sites and obtain all necessary in formation. The question of practice places for Ilia various teams was discussed, and it was decided that further negotiations should be made to obtain the training sited at the Childers road reserve. A special effort, to increase the membership of players is to be made this year. A committee of ladies was formed, whose mission it will be to keep in touch with, and help, maintain the interest of the girls who- are enthusiastic, basketballers in the primary schools. With the grading of the teams this year it is hoped that many young girls will take an active interest in this fine, healthy, outdoor sport.
