SECRET LOVE
FOOTBALLER’S BRIDE BLONDE PREFERRED SYDNEY, March 30. Behind the arrival by the Niagara yesterday of a charming New Zealand blonde is a story of secret love. The cause of it till was the eye for beauty of Bill Shanklaud, dashing Rugby League winger, and also the determination of Shanklaud, so well known to followers of football. Love and football divided the attention of iShankland prior to his depart tiro for England with the Kangaroo team. I!is football friends knew only of his football interests, but Shanklaud was resolved to take no risks of losing his New Zealand sweetheart while abroad--be insisted that they be married then and there. Unknown to other members of the team, Mrs. Shanklaud, under her maiden name, travelled by their liner, the Aorangi, as far as Auckland. “It was Bill’s wish that our marriage should be kept secret,” confessed Mrs. Shanklaud yesterday. “None of tho other fellows guessed on the Aorangi that I was Bill’s wife; but they must have wondered who the girl was,” she laughed. Mrs. Shanklaud was formerly Miss Daphne Craig, of Auckland. Sho said sho met her husband while holidaying in Sydney.
