Referring to the recent earthquake, the Napier Telegraph stales: "(ommencing with a slight, hardly percept able vibration, which first increased ano then died away, continuing over a min ute, to usher in one of the sharpest am! most unpleasant shocks felt for many r day, an earthquake visited Napier and Hastings.” Other reports show that a! Opotiki children were scared by the shaking'of the public school, and they rushed out, in the belie! that the old building might collapse. The shake, which lasted for fully a minute, was the severest experienced for several years. A prolonged and fairly severe earthquake shock was felt at Whakatane The tremor caused moveable articles to sway gently for some time, hut no damage resulted. A Wnihi message stated: “A distinct, shock of earthquake, (ravelling about east and west, was felt here, lasting a few seconds.”
