SOUTHLAND FINANCES A DIFFICULT POSITION fppr Pt-pss Association.) INVERCARGILL, last night. According! to a statement made to-day bv the treasurer ol the .Southland Rugbv tfnion. Air. A. H. Courtis, the iinances of the union tire in anything but a satisfactory state. All-. Courtis said that the union had borrowed from the Amateur Sports Trust, which controls the proceeds of the successful All Gold art union, organised in 1925, the sum of £9500, bearing interest tit 2k per cent. 'I his money was to he repaid to the Sports Trust’ at the rate of £SOO every second year, the year in which representative matches were played at home. At the time these arrangements were entered into, however. Invercargill enjoyed the universal half-holiday, and there did not appear to he any reason svhv the Rugbv union should not he ;d>le to met its obligations. With a divided half-holiday, however. had dime financial trouble to the union, and the overdraft had crept steadily up until to-day it hail increased to font figures. In addition, the union had not been able to meet its obligations with the Sports Trust, and at January 31. the end of the union’s financial year, the amount of £3OO was owing in interest and a repayment of £SOO was due. The Rugby union executive was out to re-tifv the position by curtailing expenditure commensurate with the efficient running of tho union, and it looked to the paving public and the foot Pallets generally to throw in their weight also.
