REPORT DENIED
SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY 130 MORE MEN ENGAGED (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. The temporary transfer of a survey party from the South Island Main Trunk to the Lewis Pass road survey eaused the eireuation of a report that the construction policy was again in question. However, the answer of the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, to this suggestion was to inform your correspondent that he is arranging for a further f>o men to be employed at the Parnassus end of the gap. As for the survey party, the Minister explained that it has been removed to the Lewis Pass road survey, and will return as soon as the weather becomes too severe for working in that locality. "The position of the railway survey on which this party was engaged," said the Minister, "is such that it will not hinder the work of construction. Some 26 miles have been completely surveyed. From Wharanui southwards about eight miles have 'been completely pegged, and; a trial line survey has been completed for several miles beyond this. Ample work has been set out from the north end to keep the work fully in hand until the survey party returns."
