BASKETBALL
POVERTY BAY ASSOCIATION REVIEW OF PAST YEAR Considerable progress marked the 1929-30 season of the Poverty Bay Basketball Association, and the annual report to be presented at the annual general meeting to-morrow evening contains a comprehensive review of that season’s activities." Two leagues were formed, the Thursday section consisting of 11 teams and the Saturday of eight. The season opened with a seven-a-side tournament, and the day proved most successful. Some of the matches in the Thursday competition had to be played in unfavorable weather, while there were occasions when play had to bo abandoned for weeks at a time. St. Mary’s secondary school team ran out the winners of their section, the Tui team being the runners-up. High School Old Girls team won the Saturday competition, with tho Tui representatives runners-up. Some good games were played, especially the deciding match, which was keenly contested throughout. Trophies for the runners-up were donated by Mvc. Bcalo (Thursday) and Mrs. W. A. Bowie (Saturday), both of whom gave practical evidence of their keen interest in this branch of sport. The wind-up function of the season took the form of a games evening, held in the. Garrison Hall. The Mayoress, Mrs. D. W. Coleman, presided, and an interesting programme of events was carried out under the capable administration of Mr. 0. Rigby. Poverty Bay did not attempt to send a team to the New Zealand tournament last year, but the association was represented by Mrs. Sceats and Miss G. Mead at tho annual conference in Christchurch. A Wellington B team visited Gisborne in September, the southerners playing three matches, in which tho visitors proved superior. Tlio homo teams were coached by Mr. Rigby, who always showed Jtis willingness to assist. Playing at Wairoa in October, a Poverty Bay team defeated the Wairoa representatives. The finances of tho association are sound, the outstanding items on the expenditure account being a grant towards tho travelling expenses of the Wellington B team, transport to Wairoa, affiliation fees, and the purchase of representative costumes. Despite this expenditure the funds of the association increased during tho year from £32 to £44, which position is mainly due to the splendid work performed by Mcsdames Sceats and Beale, Miss G. Wilson and the entertainment committee.
The question of whether the association should divide the two leagues into two grades will be considered at the meeting to-morrow evening, it, being felt that this would be the only way to overcome the difficulty of providing steady practice for the more experienced players and encouraging the bogiimers. Another matter which will ho discussed is the provision of a hall for practice and grounds for the Thursday competition. In the past the association has used Messrs. Common, Shelton and Co.’s wool store, while the Garrison Hall and Y.W.C.A. hall wore available on certain nights. The thanks of the association are due to those who assisted towards furthering the sport in Poverty Bay.
