TOURIST TRAFFIC
PLEA TOR ACTIVITY The appeal to New Zealanders to develop the natural attractions of their country is renewed in the fifth annual review of the New Zealand Tourist League In analysing the tourist traffic last, year, it is stated that approximately £2,285,000 was taken out of the country by 15,000 departing New Zealanders The average tourist, however, spent only £75, and the 11,000 visitors accordingly left about v £850,000 in the country. Tourist movements thus leave the Dominion with an adverse balance of about £2,000,000 a year. The report states that there was no signal increase in tourist activities last year. Reorganisation of the Tourist Department had resulted in the appointment of tirade commissioners in Australia and in East Canada. “This action lias considerable possi-
bilities, hut we should also like to see an able Dominion representative situated on the West American coast,” states the review. More intensive publi-
ity is advocated, it is stated that re
suits could not be expected from propaganda for one year, and a programme extending over from three to five years is advised.
The pooling of ideas with commercial tourist ventures is suggested, and Australian activities along these lines are cited. New Zealand loses its identity
m respect to the Auckland-Vancouver steamer service, the review states. It is pointed out that although the route is subsidised by the New Zealand Government, the title ‘‘Canadian-Austral-asian Roval Mail Line” conceals the Do-
minion’s interest. The hope is exnressed that the matter will be rectified when the agreement expires within the next, year.
