BULL BEATS WATSON GISBORNE CLUB TITLE In llk* decision of the Gisboume Lawn Tennis 'Club’s clinmpioiiiship singles compet'd ion on 'Saturday, N. 11. Bull managed to break the long run of success enjoyed by ,1\ Watson, who lias defeated him on a number of occasions during tin* current season. Bull ran out the winner of the final match after a hard battle over five sets, iii which neither player had any marked advantage at any stage. The winner showed more speed and certainty than in some of his earlier engagements this season, and his success was hailed with much interest, as an excellent example of his tenacity anil strategy. The scores went Id—dd, b—3, •">—7, (i—4 in the first four sets, and entering on the last set with matters even. Bull fought steadily and gradually gained, the ascendancy, winning the set' (i—3 and so retaining his dull championship. !
At the Poverty Bay and East Coast championship touriiiameiit, held tit Christinas, I’. Watson gained the si ll gels title, and also won the men’s doubles with D. E. Clirisp and the combined doubles with Miss Ilopkinson. In the finals of all three of these sections lie was faced by N. 11. Bull, and his triple victory was regarded as a definite proof that the veteran had lost his leadership, so long held. The reassertion of Bull’s ascendancy in the club championship match, therefore, was of greater importance than would have been tin unbroken run of successes throughout the ■season.
