MONTHLY BOARD MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) Tin* monthly meeting of the Matakaon Hospital Board was presided over by the chairman. Mr. G. AicKeddie. and (hero were also present: .Messrs. (’. Williamson, C. 11. K. Wood, A. E. Ivcmp, S. I’,. Hndland. (L L. Eraser. M. W. ilalliwell, and ( . H. Clarke. In reply to the board s request for an interview with him to enable representations to be made towards obtaining monetary assistance from the Government for the cost of treating natives in tin* .Matakaon Hospital, the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir A. T. Ngata, advised that it would not be possible for him to n.tot the proposed deputation, and stated that it would he. impracticable for his department to give any monetary assistance for hospital treatment of natives.—The letter was received. The Director General of Health, l)r. T. II A. Valin! inc. acknowledged receipt of the hoard's letter conveying its resolution regarding tin* hospital drainage system, and expressed his displeasure at th<* passing of the resolution. He stated that il was his intention to have Dr. Turhott investigate the matter further and report The Medical Officer of Health. Dr. H. l’>. Turhott, attended the meeting and fully outlined the rir cunistances, and advised that lie would report to Dr. Valinline on the matter, and that the hoard would receive advice and assistance in the near future as to the requirements. The hoard passed a resolution that it was under a misapprehension when (lie resolution was passed, expressing regret at the strain oi the letter to the *'ireetor-flener.nl, and withdrawing the letter. The Director-General of Health also wrote advocating the re-establishment of a district nursing service.- Dr. Turhott outlined the benefits to he derived from such a service, and explained the extent of the monetarv and other assistance that would he fori beaming trom the department. —The matter was discussed, and Dr. Turbot I was advised that it would receive the board’s early and carelid consideration.

On the motion of Mr. Wood, il was resolved that in cases of serious emergency the n edieal .superintendent should be permitted to call in Hie necessary help which in per opinion would be in the best interests of the patients. Mr. Ciar'e commented upon the charging of dues to patients for the davs of admission and discharge, and after some dismission, the secretary was instructed to ascertain the practice ol other boards. The death occurred at Nelson Hospital oil Saturday of Eric V. Rodley, 33, who had been in the institution since the previous Monday suffering from a severely fractured skull, the result of falling' from an upper storey window at Owen Hotel. Deceased, who was employed on plumbing work at the hotel, went to bed about: 111 o’clock on the Sunday night and was found on the ground beneath the window of his room the next morning. There was an earthquake shock during tin* night and it is surmised that deceased, when leaving his room, may have mistaken the window for the door. Deceased was the eldest son of Mr. If. V. Rodley, of Waimoa street, and leaves a n ido*v and one child.
