RADIUM IN S. AUSTRALIA
PRODUCTION IN. BIG WAY IMPORTANT MERGER . MELBOURNE, March 23. Preparations arc almost complete to produce radium in Australia on an extensive scale. This information was received today, following the announcement, by the Prime Minister, Mr. Scullin, at Canberra yesterday, that radium supplies in future wuold be sought within the Commonwealth.
Plans for a merger of the Australian Radium Producers with radium interests in England and Czechoslovakia, which will seek capital of £1,500,000; have been completed. Mr. J. Barnacle, acting manager of .the Australian Radium Corporation, stated to-day that operations had already started at the Mount Painter deposits in South Australia. So far 50 milligrams had been obtained. Of the capital raised, the Australian Radium Corporation will receive £50,000 in cash, plus 20 per cent, of the capital in fully paid share issue. "The present market value of radium," said Mr. Barnacle, "is about £l2 a milligram." The extent of at Mount Painter have not yet been ascertained) but some experts believe them to be practically unlimited.
