NEW RAILWAY LINE
TALK OF WORK AT TAUPO AN INTERESTING REPORT The possible construction of a new railway line from To Teko, on the Hangitaiki river, to the Napicr-Taupo road where is junctions with the same stream is forecasted by the Taupo correspondent of the Napier Telegraph. He writes:— "We have had a visit from a responsible officer of the Railway Department. He has been examining the country from the rail at Te Teko on the Rangitaiki river to the NapierTaupo road where it is crossed by the same stream."
Discussing the possibilities of such a line and the benefit that would result he says: "The route would follow the Rangitaiki valley and ,the Motuhina gorge, and would open up a large tract of vacant land, and very large areas of Government and private forest plantations. There is a bush mill line for 20 or 30 miles of the route, from Awakere to Matahina. Such a line would be cheaply built, as. there are not the expensive engineering difficulties that confronted the engineers on the Napicr-Wairoa line or the Rotorua-Taupo line, if such a line is built it would give useful employment to a large number of men." Officials of the Railway Department, interviewed in Napier on the matter, stated that they had heard nothing of such a proposal.
