BUILDER'S FAILURE
CLAIMS FOR WAGES SUB-CONTRACTOR'S POSITION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In a case under the Wages Protection Act, claims amounting to £Bl9 were made by sub-contractors against two builders'who were engaged m erecting three houses. One of them, a man naineu Bitters, got into difficulties, and the magistrate said he had hidden himself for &j> months, and could not be served with legal notices. After that lie was arrested and adjudged bankrupt, whereupon the Official Assignee stepped in and wanted proof of claims. The point was whether the plaintiffs had a prior claim to other creditors. The magistrate held that Bitters' action could not defeat their rights, and orders were made for the whole amount.
