The visiting athletes who competed at the llawke's Bay-Poyeriy Bay subcentre championships at the' reserve on Saturday afternoon were entertained by the Qisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club'at a. dance in the evening. The function was held in the City Hall, and was largely attended, Mrs Heeney's orchestra providing the music. A. warm welcome was extended to the visitors by Mr. H. P. Porstcr, president of the Qisborne club, who referred to their splendid sportsmanship both on and oil Ihe track. The speaker then presented the Pell Cup. for the highest championship points, lo Mr. R. Algie, secretary of the Qisborne clubs and congratulated tite (lis'boriie competitors on their outstanding success. Mr. C, Lonergnn, manager of the Napier team and the C.isbm'ne club's delegate to the llawke's Hay-Poverty Bay sub-centre, responded in appropriate terms, and complimented the Qisborne athletes on their performances that afternoon. Napier were the previous holders of the cup, said Mr. Lon'ei'gan. and they were pleased to lose it to such a sporting team. Mr. L. ,1. Eddy replied on behalf of the Hastings representatives, mentioning that he would like to see athletes from Qisborne compete at the. forthcoming meetings in Hastings. On behalf of the Waipawa Athletic. Club, Mr. Leach, sen., thanked the Gisbome club for tho splendid treatment meted out to their competitors.
