ESCAPED BEING DROWNED
BOAT SINKS IN RIVER
(Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. Mr. T. Downing and his wife and three children, aged 16, nine, and five, had a narrow escape from- drowning in the Manawatu River yesterday afternoon. They were rowing in a flat-bot-tomed boat when the oars broke. The bout drifted on to a submerged snag and filled rapidly. The occupants scrambled on to, the snag, being finally rescued by means of a rope and raft. Mrs. Downing was, in the water for two hours before being safely landed on the bank.
