“A NECESSARY WORK”

MORERE DEVIATION ADVOCATED BY BUSINESS MEN The importance of the proposed Morere deviation to all classes of traffic on the main soutii road was strongly emphasised at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, and it was resolved to communicate with the Minister of Public Works, again urging that the deviation should be put through. It was pointed out, also, that the commencement of the deviation would do much to relieve the unemployment situation in this district. The motion that the Minister of Public Works should be requested to have the deviation undertaken immediately was proposed by Mr. C. G, Bloore, who stated that as a relief work this new road would be of much greater benefit than the Waikaremoana-liotorua road, or the putting through of a road from Hangaroa to VVaikaremoana; this latter route apparently was under consideration by the department, but the saving in time on that road, which would be used almost entirely for pleasure purposes, would be as nothing compared with the value of the time that, would be saved .on the journey from •Gisborne to Napier and Wellington if the deviation were undertaken. All the service drivers on the south road were strongly in favor of the deviation, continued Mr. Bloore, who stressed the possibility of the present Morere hill road falling away. The present ro;ld could not be improved, and the deviation would greatly reduce the grade and cut out two most dangerous hills. In seconding the motion, Mr. A. L. Muir remarked that the deviation had been contemplated for a long time, and the road in its present more or less dangerous state required very careful driving. The president, Mr. L. Miles, remarked that when the chamber advocated the deviation before the department replied that there were more urgent works relinking attention, and the chamber wouldprobably receive the same reply on this occasion. The deviation was a very necessary work in the opinion of Mr. T. Corson, who stated that lie had been informed that- the Public Works Department had laid down that tho Mangapoike road was to he the main highway south, and that was the main reason why the deviation was not being proceeded with.
