Three bathers had a narrow escape from drowning in the surf at Scott s Point at the northern end of Ninety Mile Beach on Boxing Day. A party consisting of Mr. W. Buckle, a member of the Mangonui County Council staff, and Mr Cavaye, accountant at the Bank of Australasia,,Mangonui, went in surf bathing. Mr. Buckle went out as far as the last breaker, and Mr. Cavaye, who saw that he was getting in a dangerous position, called out, but Mr. Buckle did not hear. Mr Cavaye then went to his assistance. and also got into difficulties in the undertow. Mr. Berridge went to Mr. Cavayc's assistance, but also got into trouble, and could not make headway toward the shore. Mr. Adams, who had just entered the water, and who is a powerful and experienced swimmer, went to Mr. Buckle, and after a great struggle got linn ashore, where he fell down exhausted. Mr. Adams again entered the water' to rescue Mr. Cavaye and Mr. Berridge. With the assistance of Mr. Berridge lie got Mr. Cavaye ashore in the last stages of exhaustion." Mr. Adams ibehaved with the greatest courage, and had it not been for his experience in the sea the other three would assuredly have been drowned.
