NEW YEAR ATTRACTIONS

IN TOWN AND COUNTRY SPORTS AND PASTIMES As usual, residents of the Poverty Bay district will bo provided With a. good assortment of attractions for the New Year holidays. Sports meetings and held sports will be held in town anil country on New Year's Day am! the day tollowing, and the interest which in being taken in tho fortheom ing fixtures points Inwards record at tendances at some places. An attraction this year which should prove of more than passing interest to local and country residents will be the Mardi Cras queen coronation ceremony at the reserve to-night. At midnight a display of fireworks will take place, and this should prove, a popular attraction to I huso wishing to see Iho old year out and Ihe new year in. Of late years there has been a growing tendency among holidaymakers to patronise the sports meetings further afield, hut despite this the success of the Te Karaka Sports Club's fixture on New Year's Day is well assured. Amateur athletes will bo there in force. To Kanaka's meeting being the most, popular event of the year so Jar as supporters of this branch of sport are concerned. Tho programme will include horse and miscellaneous events, the former being of particular interest to country patrons.

At Patutahi Domain to-morrow tho Ngatapa Sports Club will, conduct its annual meeting, which is looked forward to by professional athletes and horsemen, both of whom have provided some very interesting entertainment during recent years. Highland dancing should appeal to a certain section of tho public who intend making this fixture their objective, for New Year's Day.

- j lho Nuhaka Agricultural and Pastoral Society's annual show should attract a number of Poverty Bay residents to-morrow. In addition to the northern visitors, then; should bo a good attendance of Wairoa. residents, the event being of special interest to stock-breed-ers of that district. Competitors from the Poverty Bay and Wairoa districts Will meet in the horse events, while other sections should provide much to interest the ladies. In Gisborno to-morrow the annual bowling tournament for tho Peace Shield will commence, play being continued on tho following day. Twenty rinks will be competing, six from each of tho Kahutia, Gisborne, and Poverty Bay clubs, and one from each of the To Karaka and Tolaga. Bay.(-bibs. The Waipiro Bay tennis tournament, among tho outstanding events of its kind on tho Coast, 'commences to-mor-row, and will bo continued on Thursday and Friday. Tho entries aro exceptionally large, and some good tennis is anticipated. Of tho sports meetings held in the more remote country townships, the ono planned by tho Rakauroa club is most attractive'. Another fixture which should receive good patronage is the Frasertown Athletic Club's meeting on tho day after New Year's Day. Run-

Other attractions set down for New Year's Day are the Waiapu Athletic Club's meeting at Tikitiki and the Hautanoa Swimming Club's carnival to ho held at. Tokomam Bay. The chief sports attraction in Poverty Bay on Thursday is the meeting to be held under the auspices of the Ormond Sports Club. A, feature of the fixture will be the 300yds. men's handicap 1 for the Orant-Downio trophy. lijitrios for tliis event will lie free, and post entries will be accepted mi Iho ground.
