SLAVERY UNDER THE FLAG
LONDON, Nov. 11. Measures are being advanced for abolishing the last remnants of slavery, or its like, under the British flag. The Mui-tsai system in Hongkong is to be ended as soon as practicable. Steps in this direction are the instructions given by Lord Passfield, the. Secretary for the Colonies, 'to the Governor of Hongkong, and the action taken thereupon by tiie Legislative Council. Mui-tsai, the system whereby Chinese girls between the ages of four and 14 are adopted or sold as domestic servants, has been subject to great abuses; and of late years much criticism of its tendencies has come from English writers. The existence of secret slavery, together with other barbarous conditions, is to lie explored by three expeditions into the wilds of Burma. Supervised bv Mi 1 . Leonard, of the Burma Frontier Service, they are to set forth next month.
