BUSY CHRISTMAS

LARGER BUS TRAFFIC TRAVELLERS BY RAIL Most of tho transport services were well patronised during the week, although on account of tho Merdl Gras attraction on the Childcrs road reserve more, people stayed in towu yesterday instead of going to the country sports meetings. This was reflected in the passenger traffic on the railway yesterday, when slightly fewer passengers woro carried than was the case on Boxing Day last year. The Christmas Evo "traffic, however, was good, and was about on a par with last year. Tho late trains to Ngatapa and Waikohu were well filled, while tho other trains during the day carried large numbers oi people. The bookings for main lino travel for the holidays showed a slight increase over similar business done in Gisborne at this time last year, j More people patronised tho munici-i pal transport services* on Christmas Eve than was the ease a year ago, and this despite the wet afternoon and evening. During Tuesday afternoon the buses experienced a comparatively slack t/ime, but througnout the remainder of tho clay and at night they were kept going with capacity loads, and carried 500 more passengers than did the trams and the buses combined on last year's Christmas Evo, and the fares collected were £l3 greater. With large numbers of people attending the Childcrs road reserve attraction yesterday the buses were again kept very busy.
