THE MARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL PERIOD TO-MORROW'S ATTRACTIONS yesterday saw the opening of the real carnival period of the Mardi Gras, while further functions are to bo hold this evening, to-morrow, Monday, and Tuesday. Children's events were held on the tinklers road reserve this afternoon, including races and dancing, while for this evening a carnival night is scheduled, when the finalists in the dancing are expected to appear. The Park racecourse has been en gaged for to-morrow's attraction, which will include horse events, motor-cycle races and motor-car acceleration tests. Permission has been secured by the Mardi Gras organisation, through the Gisborne Racing Club, from the Minister of Internal Affairs, to hold a station hack race for owners of such horses, and if sufficient entries are available it is intended to conduct such an event, which should form one of the most popular attractions. The Mardi Gras \ Queen election closes on Monday night, and this will bo followed ou Tuesday evening by the coronation of the queen. At. present the queens stand in tlie following positions according to votes: St. John Ambulance 1, Tennis a, Athletic 3. A particidarly keen contest is anticipated during the last few days available for voting.
