EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
SETTLING OF CLAIMS
COMMISSION MAY BE SET UP (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. “What I think will eventually hampen will be that the claims for earthquake relief approved by the Local committees will be cleared out of the way, and then a commission willbe set up to investigate claims in which there is some difference of opinion,” said the Mayor of Christchurch, the Rev. J. K. Archer, to-day,, after liis return from Wellington, where he attended a meeting of the central reljef committee. _ Much time was spent in consideration of the question of allotting the money available for relief, said Mr.' Archer. * On the whole much more difficulty was
found in distributing the money than in raising it, because human nature being constituted as it was, some claimants were too aggressive in pushing their cases, and others were too timid. Further, in spite of the published notices of the date on which the claims closed, many had still to be presented. “Consequently,” ended the Mayor, “nothing in the nature of a final distribution ran yet be attempted, and it has been arranged that the committee shall meet again- in a fortnight.”
