ACTUAL FAIR DISPLAY IN CITY HALL Notwithstanding the unfavorable state of the weather, a good degree of success attended the annual fair, held under the auspices of the Gisborne branch of the Young Women’s Christian Association in the City Hall this afternoon. Stalls, decorated with 'blue and white streamers j and laden with a tempting array of 'fancy goods, Rowers, and foodstuffs, gave the "hall an attractive appearance, and, judging from the stream of purchasers, appeared to be doing good trade. .The function was opened by the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, who congratulated the association on the excellent display, which had been attained through the enthusiastic efforts of an energetic band of workers. The speaker said it would be admitted by all that the association was responsible for a considerable amount of good work, which had been accomplished i,n a praiseworthy manner, and was d.ue to the enthusiasm and keenness displayed by members of the committee.

“It not only strives to provide bright social entertainments,” said the Mayor, “bu,t endeavors to impart useful and helpful instruction in numerous wavs. It is encouraging to see a young lady, although a comparative stranger to the town, made to feel at home in her new surroundings. This is o;iiy one of many things done by the Y.W.C.A., to which there is always an open door. Nor is it a kill-joy institution. The association endeavors to provide attractive functions, in the wav of social evenings, and has done its share towards creating a strong liking for good, clean, healthy out door recreations. ” Tho speaker went on to say that the association had been provided with playing areas for the basketball tournaments, while tbe Borough Council bad placed at its disposal three tennis at the Butene road reserve The Y.W.C.A, was a world-wide organisation, and played a big part in creating a feeling of fellowship among young people. Concluding, the Mayor expressed a hope that tile function would prove successful, and declared flic fair open. The stallholders were as under: Produce, Mesdames Stewart. Hohlsworfh. Cotterill. R. Murphy, and Blackburn: sweets, Mesdames Falconer, Bridge’, and McKee; sugar-bag, Mesdames Witty and Barn ell, and Miss McShnne; cakds, Mesdames Biacli, ICendon, and Lawton, and Miss Me Are ; flowers. Mesdames Faulds and Nugent, and Miss Barrow; fancywork, Mesdames Clare, Broad. Robertson, and Reynolds, and Misses Scott and Marriott; novelty, Mrs. Silverwood and members of the girls’ -111 b of the Y.W.C.A.; ice cream and miscellaneous, members of the gills’ club of the Y.W.C.A.
