AIRCRAFT DESIGN

GERMANS’ REVOLUTION PLANE WITHOUT TAIL (Times Cables.) BERLIN, Sept. 19. 'Treaty restrictions upon the construction of military aircraft in Germany are profoundly influencing German research. Aircraft makers abroad aim at obtaining -the maximum performative through increased engine power. Germany aims .at reducing the engine power to a minimum, and improving the aerodynamic qualities of the machine, heme the interest taken in the trials of the new Rbonorosittan, a tailless aeroplane which has been pronounced satisfactory. The company has been long prominent in motorless flying, and first tried out rnan-driven models. It has now built ti. machine driven hy a,. 10 horse-power pusher screw. Surfaces on the wingtips give direction, elevation and lateral balance. Tho machine climbed well, and attained a speed of 50 miles per hour. It is an early example of the “Flying Wing” aeroplane, towards which some firms are working, including Junkers, whose new all-metal monoplane, now being constructed, will have engines and some passenger accommodation in tho wings. By thus modifying the aircraft design, Gorman designers hope to solve the commercial aviation and economic problem. BRITISH FLYING BOATS NEW DESIGN SUBMITTED (Australian and N. 55. Press Association.) LONDON, Sept. 20. Designs have been submitted to the Air Ministry for 50-passenger metal flying boats of tho pattern of the machines which circumnavigated Australia, each having six engines, with a non-stop range of 1000 miles, and able to fly with two engines out of action. The total weight is from 30 to 49 tons. There is a kitchen and a dining room and sleeping accommodation for every passenger. Some of the planes are intended for the India-Australia services.
