OVERSEAS TRADE

AUGUST EXPORTS UP RISE IN IMPORTS EIGHT AND 12 MONTHS’ FIGURES. Some interesting features appear in the overseas trade returns for Augustissued by the Customs Department on Thursday. There was an increase in the value ot expats amounting to £575,659 last month, compared with August, 1928, which largely offsets the decrease of £579,817 noted in July. The imports during last month were £36,777 less than for August, 1928, when tho figure was higher than it had been for some considerable time. The position, is shown in the following table : Increase Aug., Aug., or 1929. 1928. decrease. £ £ £ Exports ... 2,580,860 2,005,201 575.659 Imports ... 4.275.000 4,311,777 *36,777 Excess of imp. 1,694.140 2,306,576 ■"indicates decrease. EIGHT MONTHS' FIGURES.' More interest attaches to the figures Covering the eight months of the year to August 31, which show that the exports were practically the sante as for the corresponding period of last year, the difference being only £4158. On the other hand, imports show an increase for the period of £2,378,342 compared with last year. It. is said that over £1.000,000 of the increase is accounted for by motor vehicles. There has also been an increase in fertiliser imports, which should ultimately be retlected in increased production. Although still very substantial the excess of exports for the eight months of the present year is Jess by £2,382.500 than for the corresponding period of 1928, as will be seen from ttie following comparative statement : Eight Eight Increase months, months, or 1929. 1928. decrease. £ £ £ Exports 43.072,236 43,076,394 *4.1-58 Imports 31,272,095 28,893,753 2,378,542 Excess of f exports 11,800,141 14,182.641 "Indicates decrease. TOTALS FOR 12 MONTHS. Taking the moving 12 month totals it will be seen that- the relative position is much the same. An increase of £394,270 in exports, set off against tiie increase of £2,693,282 in imports makes the excess of exports "for the 12 months £2,299,102' less than for the previous 12 months, as is shown in the following table: Twelve Twelve months, months, 1928-29. 1927-28.
