AUGUST EXPORTS UP RISE IN IMPORTS EIGHT AND 12 MONTHS’ FIGURES. Some interesting features appear in the overseas trade returns for Augustissued by the Customs Department on Thursday. There was an increase in the value ot expats amounting to £575,659 last month, compared with August, 1928, which largely offsets the decrease of £579,817 noted in July. The imports during last month were £36,777 less than for August, 1928, when tho figure was higher than it had been for some considerable time. EIGHT MONTHS' FIGURES.' More interest attaches to the figures Covering the eight months of the year to August 31, which show that the exports were practically the sante as for the corresponding period of last year, the difference being only £4158. On the other hand, imports show an increase for the period of £2,378,342 compared with last year. It. is said that over £1.000,000 of the increase is accounted for by motor vehicles. There has also been an increase in fertiliser imports, which should ultimately be retlected in increased production.
