2000 CHILDREN PRESENT SUCCESSFUL OVAL FUNCTION Strength and speed were combined to good advantage in the assortment of games at the Oval yesterday, when the annual primary school sports were held under the, auspices of the Poverty P>av Primary Schools’ Association. Approximately 2000 children, representing all tin: schools in the Poverty Bay and the surrounding district, were present at the function, which was one of the most successful of .its kind held in Gisborne. The lengthy programme of Ktig'by football, basketball, pass-ball.■ overheadhall, athletic and miscellaneous events was completed "without a hitch, and in this respect much, credit- was due to tire officials in charge. A series of foot races in which the competitors were classed according to their age occupied a large portion of the programme, and provided keen enjoyment for the children who were unable to jvarticipate in the teams’ games. Good entries and strong competition, were noticeable features of the function, it being especially encouraging .to the association • to receive such good support from the schools in tile outlying districts.
