EMDEN IN CORAL LAGOON
CONSUL'S SUGGESTION PROBABLY “CLEANING UP” The Bidden Was seen ancliorcd in the coral lagoon, near the lighthouse on Wriilagilala Island. When the Tofua wirelessed asking if anything was wrong a vague reply Came back that statics were Bad, and asking if there was any message for the warship. The Tofua was about a mile away, grid, communicating with the New Zealand station, asked about the strength of the message. The New Zealand station replied that it was “roaring in.” There was plenty of conjecture as to the cause of the presence of the Emden in the lagoon. It is understood that the Emden left Suva to go on to Pago Pago, calling at two. islands of the Eastern Fijian .Igroup oil the Way, but that nothing was skid about . calling at Wriilagilala, nbr did the wireless officers of the Emden give any explanation. The reference to the Emden, together with the report published in Auckland, were submitted to the German Consul, Mr. W. PenSeler. He replied with a smile (Says the Dominion) that he knew nothing about the matter and could only suggest that the vessel had gone there to clean up in the ordinary way. When in Auckland the ship anchored off Whangafei for similar purposes.
