INTERESTING INNOVATION An interesting innovation that has been decided upon by the Dunedin Athenaeum authorities is the issue of a monthly bulletin. In addition to appropriate pnd informative literary notes the latest book issues are given thuriibnail reviews. , “The committee has decided to make an experiment in the issue of an informal monthly ‘bulletin,’ which *ft trusts may be of interest and use to tli© members of the Athenaeum,” states the journal. “Briefly, the idea is to supply short notes on two matters: First, the progress of the institution, and second, current literature as it arrives from abroad. It is thought that considering the mass of, in particular, fiction that is placed on the shelves a guide to books worth reading might be attempted through short critiques by readers. The puffs and notices of publishers are becoming every day moro unreliable, and' books of five minutes are hailed as books of the month. Perhaps candid criticisms may be as Useful as discoveries of unheralded books of real merit. Members are asked to assist the committee by supplying, short frnhk notices of any books they may have read. Such contributions will be gratefully welcomed. The success of I lie ‘femletih’ will be assured if the effort is co-operative.” The “bulletin" is very newsy.
