THE BUDGET PROPOSALS TAX ON U.S. GOODS URGED (Per Press Association,l PALMEKSTON N., last night. The Chamber of Commerce this evening decided to advise the Government that, the Palmerston North importers considered that an additional duty of at least 5 per cent, could be placed on all American goods imported info New Zealand, so long as importers are given reasonable notice of the increase. The resolution was the result of a discussion on the recent doubling of the primage duty. An investigation showed that as the'result of comprehensive inquiries there was no great opposition to tho added tax. as it would not affect the cost of living to a degree likely to occasion concern, and secondary industries were not likely to he adversely affected. The following resolution was carried at a meeting of the Otago Motor Club this evening: "That this meeting views with alarm the recently published statement that the Government does not intend to transfer the sum of £2.000.000 from the Consolidated Fund to the Highways Account'. This is a distinct breach of faith on the part of the Government, as the Act provides that no less than this amount should be transferred each year, and on ibis understanding the motorists agreed to the taxation under the Act. This meeting urges all representatives to oppose strenuojuslv any such action on the part of the Government, as this would throw all the liability on to the motorists."
