BOROUGH AFFAIRS

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council was hold last evening, the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, presiding. There were also present: Crs. J. Blair, H. E. Maude, J. \V. H. Holmes, (I. Bradley Smith. S. V. Beaufoy, E. Collin. W. Cave, and YV. J. Mac Gibbon. Tin- medical officer of health. Dr. H. B, Turbott, wrote asking tho council to meet him for the purpose, of discussing several matters relating to the health of the, borough.—lt was decided to ask the officer to meet the health committee at its meeting on Monday. Mr. A. Taylor wrote complaining about the bad' state of the drains in Beach road, and asking that the council .should attend to the matter.—The. Mayor stated that the engineer had the matter in hand. Permission was granted to the St. John Ambulance Association to hold a street sale of flowers on .Saturday, September 14.

REPORTS RESERVES COMMITTEE The reserves committee reported, inter alia : "Abattoir Hour: The. question of the dangerous smooth-surfaced floor a! Hie abattoirs in the vicinity of a, pithing pen received your committee's careful consideration. The Government veterinarian. Mr. Haugh, attended ami stated that several accidents had recently occurred. A visit of inspection was made to the abattoirs and the question of improving the floor and several other small matters were left to the engineer to attend to.

"Claim for shoe]) stolen : An account for sheep stolen from the butchers' holding pens at the abattoirs was investigated, and it was decided to recognise no liability in the matter, as under the abattoir by-laws, section 7, the responsibility is that of the butcher concerned, and not the council. "Loans, merged areas, for water and sewage: In regard to those proposals, your committee decided that the water reticulation should only cover the areas to be sewered, and the amounts for the water loan in the different, districts should be reduced accordingly." FINANCE COMMITTEE. Tho finance committee reported: "Rebate of rates: The question of making an allowance in connection with the rates on the Edward Murphy Mater nity Home, conducted by the Salvation Army, was considered, and it was agreed to reduce the rates on the home, amounting to £36 19s to £2O, as the home was being run at a loss, and a certain number of maternity cases were attended without charge. This 'concession is granted without establishing a precedent, and. of course, the rates on the vacant section alongside, amounting to £l7 Bs, will have, to be paid Ml,full." BUS STANDS Arising out of a conference between a special committee of the council and motor bus proprietors, a report was submitted in which if was stated that it liad been decided that stands for buses and service cars should be as follows : "A. Bus stand. Peel street, behind taxi stand, Bank of New South Wales. Tho stand is to be occupied as at piesent by service cars and motor omnibuses in the order named on spaces as allotted.

"B. Stand on Saturday nights for picture house patrons, stands to he proclaimed in the centre of Gladstone road between Bright and Grey street after 10 o'clock for the use of motor omnibuses and service cars, the vehicles taking up their position at Grey street intersection in order of arrival, irrespective of

whether a service caiy or motor onunbus. "C. Omnibus stand for municipal service buses for patrons of places of amusement after 10 p.m. againsl the kerb on each side of Gladstone road between Peel and Bright streets. "I). Extra stand for motor omnibuses and service cars in centre of Grey street between Gladstone and Childers roads. "It is desired that these stands be recognised immediately in the interest of traffic, and that the, council should incorporate same in a by-law at the first opportunity." The reports were adopted.
